Description

Jai Giridhariji!

The Govardhan Puja is a festival commemorating the time when Krishna saved the residents of Vraj from Indra’s storms. The young Lord lifted Govardhan Hill and kept it aloft on His little finger for seven days, thereby sheltering all the people and cows from the violent rains. Traditionally, we offer a mountain of food to the Lord on this day in remembrance and gratitude for all He does to protect those who take His shelter.

Did you know?

Young Krishna told His father, Nanda, to worship Govardhan Hill instead of Indra, because the hill provided all that the village needed to survive. Indra took offense. Although he was aware that little Krishna was the Supreme Lord, Indra's pride and arrogance got the best of him and he threatened the villagers of Goloka with seven days of violent rainstorms. Seeing the Supreme Lord’s magnificent power to be able to hold up the entire hill with so little effort, like an umbrella, crushed Indra’s pride and he fell at the Lord’s feet to beg forgiveness.

What to expect

Our normal evening prayers will be extended to include a special Govardhan Puja, as well as additional kirtan and lots of singing and dancing.

What to wear

Govardhan Puja is a festive occasion. Indian dress is encouraged, but not required. Women are asked to wear saris or ankle-length skirts and men are encouraged to wear kurtas and dhotis, or nice shirts and trousers.

    Sponsor this event

Most of our festivities are free and open to the public. Sponsoring a puja is wonderful way to say thank you to Gurudev for all the blessings you have received from Him. It is also a generous way to help make the event available to others and to contribute to making it memorable for everyone.

The act of giving from the heart is a true blessing in and of itself. By helping to sponsor the event you reap the benefits from all the prayers done during the festivities. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you may still take part by becoming a sponsor.
