This workshop is designed for beginners and those who already play harmonium. The harmonium workshop – basic level, is divided into four parts:

  • theory

  • proper use and maintenance

  • chords and notes

  • bhajan learning

First we learn about the instrument: the origin, how it came to India and why it was accepted and widely used. We learn the different styles of harmoniums and differences between them. We learn the very basic theory as how the harmonium produces sound as this will help us maintain it and properly use it and the basic functions: scales, notes, drone and air stop knobs, coupler, bellows, reeds, why and how to use the drone knobs, etc.

We learn the proper position of right and left hands as well as sitting position.

Bhakti Marga Sw Kanjalochana Harmonium Course

We learn how to keep harmonium in good shape and how to treat the instrument. How to protect the harmonium during travel. Two basic ways of playing the instrument will be taught: melodic and harmonic, with notes and chords. You will learn about the notes and chords and how to use them in playing and the style of playing with the drone key to enrich the sound of harmonium.

For the basic level we learn the three basic chords and learn to play one or more bhajans.

If you have your own harmonium it is recommended that you bring it with you. If not, this is not a hindrance to attend the workshop.

Bhakti Marga has its headquarters at Shree Peetha Nilaya, meaning ‘Abode of the Maha Lakshmi’, the Divine Mother. It is located in the beautiful German countryside near Wiesbaden. Residents and guests come together every day to participate in special events, prayers, meditation, singing, seva, and to share their love of the Divine with one another.

The course will take place in the Music room.

In ancient times, yogis would receive Divine Inspiration through the connection to God in Nature. Shree Peetha Nilaya is such a place.
