Holy Thursday is the day before the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is on Holy Thursday that commemorates four important events in the life of Jesus Christ. The first being “The Institution of the Eucharist.” It was on this day that Jesus took both bread and wine, and explained to His disciples the Holy Communion. The second event is the “Washing of the Feet.” It is by this act that Jesus demonstrated His humility and His mission, showing that He has come as a servant of mankind. The third event is known as the “Prayer in the Garden.” Knowing that the Crucifixion was near, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane and reaffirmed His full surrender to God the Father. The fourth event is “The Betrayal” of Jesus by Judas Iscariot. Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss and the next day Jesus was Crucified. On Holy Thursday we remember these events through scriptural readings, Orthodox ceremonies, and participating in the Washing of the Feet tradition.
