Dance the Raas with Krishna

Kartik Night celebrates the Raas Leela between Krishna and the gopis. It is symbolic of the supreme Love relationship between a bhakta and the Lord. On this night, we celebrate Krishna as the centre point of our lives and express our love and devotion to Him in the form of a large oil lamp made up dozens of small individual lamps representing the bhaktas.

During Kartik month, many devotees light a lamp for the Lord. All these lights symbolise your dedication to the Lord, your surrender to Him, and asking Him to always bestow His blessing and Grace upon you.

Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda

Did you know?

Kartik month is a time when Lord Krishna makes Himself more available to His devotees than at any other time of the year. During this time, whatever you do in remembrance of Krishna will bear merits a hundred times more than usual, even for the smallest of offerings. As He blesses all immensely during Kartik, it is considered most auspicious to stay awake all night to praising Him and dancing the Raas with Him. Many devotees also undertake special austerities such as fasting during the month-long event.

What to expect

Paramahamsa Vishwananda will lead this joyous festival as we venerate Krishna with several pujas, sing Sri Sri Radha Krishna bhajans, and take turns singing and dancing around the oil lamp the whole night through. The celebration begins with puja and the lighting of the kambam lamp which is kept burning from 18:00 until 06:00 the next morning. After the lamp has been extinguished, the rice from the colourful Rangoli designs surrounding the lamp is gathered up and given out as prasad.

What to wear

Kartik Night is a festive occasion. Indian dress is encouraged, but not required. Women are asked to wear saris or ankle-length skirts. Men are should wear kurtas and dhotis, or nice shirts and trousers.

Sponsor this event

Most of our festivals are free and open to the public. Sponsoring a puja is wonderful way to say thank you to Gurudev for all the blessings you have received from Him. It is also a generous way to help make the event available to others and to contribute to making it memorable for everyone. The act of giving from the heart is a true blessing in and of itself and is much appreciated by Gurudev.
