9 Forms of Maa

Shree Peetha Nilaya is happy to announce our first celebration of spring Navaratri. Navaratri is a 9-night festival celebrating the Divine Mother who is the mother of all creation. Durga Devi, the Remover of Miseries, appears in 9 different forms, each an embodiment of the qualities that one needs in order to advance on the spiritual path.
Spring Navaratri

What to expect

Each night we worship a different aspect of the Divine Mother with special prayers, pujas, and bhajans. After a nightly yagna (holy fire ceremony), an abhishekam will be performed and an abundance of prasad will be offered to Her Feet. The story of Devi’s victories over numerous demons, the triumph of good over evil and the elevation of Divine Love over the ego will be read each evening from the Devi Mahatmyam. We end each night with arati and often a late night dance party.

What to wear

Navaratri is a festive occasion, so traditionally we dress in the colours of each goddess listed below. Indian dress is encouraged, but not required. Women must wear saris or ankle-length skirts and bring a shawl for covering their heads in order to participate in the yagna. Men are asked to wear kurtas and dhotis, or nice shirts and trousers.

Did you know?

Spring and Fall are times of transition and restoring balance both physically and spiritually. Ancient yogis chose this time to focus on their sadhana and to cleanse the physical body by fasting in preparation for the food changes of the new season. Navaratri is a time when we do both in the company of ‘sangha’, our spiritual community.

Spring Navaratri

Vasanta or Spring Navaratri is connected to Lord Rama, a masculine aspect of divinity. The nine-day festival ends on Ram Navami, His Appearance Day. Lord Rama is known as the incarnation of dharmic righteousness and the embodiment of compassion. In contrast, Sharada or Fall Navaratri is connected to Devi, the feminine aspect of the Divine. This festival concludes with Dussehra, the victory day when Durga Devi’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura is celebrated.

Katyayani Devi

Katyayani Devi is a fierce form of Shakti. She is widely known as the war goddess who killed the demons of anger and hatred. While She is compassionate, She is also strict and disciplined to help us advance towards the Divine. We pray to Her to destroy diseases, sorrow and fear and to bless us with wealth, salvation, success, passion, a good mate, and a deep spiritual life. Her colour is Peacock Green/Blue.

Sponsoring Navaratri

Most of our festivals are free and open to the public. Sponsoring a puja is wonderful way to say thank you to Gurudev for all the blessings you have received from Him. It is also a generous way to help make the event available to others and to contribute to making it memorable for everyone. The act of giving from the heart is a true blessing in and of itself and is much appreciated by Gurudev.

Spring Navaratri, ending on Ram Navami, is especially auspicious in that it lasts for 9 nights. By helping to sponsor even a single night, you reap the benefits from all the prayers done throughout the entire event. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you may still take part and receive all the blessings by becoming a sponsor.

In ancient times, yogis would receive Divine Inspiration through the connection to God in Nature. Shree Peetha Nilaya is such a place.
