The Cosmic Mother

Gayatri Devi is the Mother of the Vedas, the five elements and all of creation. She is the universal cosmic aspect of the Divine Mother and Mother of the Holy Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Her Gayatri Mantra is a 'Moksha Mantra' which means chanting it with devotion can lead one to liberation. The Gayatri Yagna (holy fire ceremony) is one of the most auspicious of all yagnas and the purification it grants burns karma to help us advance on our spiritual path.

What to Expect

This beautiful ritual lasts for 24 hours. It begins with special prayers and pujas before lighting the yagna fire. During the yagna, participants will chant 10,000 repetitions of the Gayatri Mantra and make continuous offerings into the fire. Traditionally, we stay awake during the night and take turns coming to the fire to make offerings. However, you are welcome to come and go as you please. The event ends the next morning with an abhishekam and arati to Gayatri Devi, and prasad is given to all.

Did you know

Gayatri Devi is a five-headed goddess who sees everything in all directions at once. She is the personification of the 24-syllable Gayatri Mantra. The Gayatri Mantra reflects the caring energy of the Divine Mother, Her power of creation, and the strength of reasoning that enlightens your intellect and awakens the brilliance of the Divine Light within yourself.

Om bhur bhuva svaha
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yonah prachodayaat

MEANING: ‘Oh Divine Mother, I meditate on Thee as the Supreme Light that illumines the earth, the sky and the heavens, the adorable Sun of Divine Consciousness that illumines the devas and dissipates all darkness and ignorance. Through Thy Grace, may You enlighten my intellect and awaken the same brilliant Divine Light in me.’

What to Wear

This is a festive occasion; traditionally we dress in white, pink, red or green in honour of Gayatri Devi. Indian dress is encouraged, but not required. Women must wear saris or ankle-length skirts and bring a shawl to participate in the yagna. Men are asked to wear kurtas and dhotis, or nice shirts and trousers.

Sponsor this event

Most of our festivities are free and open to the public. Sponsoring a puja is wonderful way to say thank you to Gurudev for all the blessings you have received from Him. It is also a generous way to help make the event available to others and to contribute to making it memorable for everyone.

The act of giving from the heart is a true blessing in and of itself. By helping to sponsor the event you reap the benefits from all the prayers done during the festivities. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you may still take part by becoming a sponsor.
