Description

Shivaratri: Awakening Devotion

Shiva is pure consciousness. He is the Supreme Lord’s greatest bhakta as He is always meditating upon Narayana. Known as the Lord of Destruction, He stands for the dissolution of the mind, which is exactly what we need in order for pure Love to awaken inside the heart. Through His Grace, Shiva destroys our pride and ego so that bhakti can grow in our hearts and we can rise to attain the Lotus Feet of Lord Narayana.

By forgetting about ourselves and staying up all night, worshipping and singing the glories of God, Lord Shiva helps us to stay focused, break the patterns of the mind, and to overcome the temptations of Maya which keep us from realising God.

Shivaratri is when you forget about your mind and let your mind dwell only on the Divine. That's what Shivaratri is - it is uplifting you and really awakening what is deep inside of you.

What to expect during Shivaratri

In the morning, we will do puja and abhishekam on the Shiva murti outside. Throughout the night of Shivaratri we will sing, dance and perform bathing rituals on several Shiva lingams, including the Mrityum Bageshwar Lingam blessed by Mahavatar Babaji.

Shivaratri is a time to sincerely pray to Lord Shiva to ask Him to install Himself in our hearts. As we bathe Him in the form of a lingam, He is cleaning our inner impurities and awakening the devotion within us, so that we can realise Him in our hearts and see Him everywhere.

What to wear

Shivaratri is a festive occasion, so traditionally we dress in white as that is the colour of Shiva. Indian dress is encouraged, but not required. Women are encouraged to wear saris or ankle-length skirts and men are asked to dress smartly or wear a dhoti and kurta. If the weather is cold, be sure to dress warmly as the daytime part of the event is outside.

    Schedule

There will be four rounds of puja, abhishekam and offerings. After the puja and abhishekam, the round will close with arati and the distribution of prasad.

    • 1st Round: 18:00 – 21:00
    • 2nd Round: 21:00 – 24:00
    • 3rd Round: 24:00 – 03:00
    • 4th Round: 03:00 – 07:00

    Offerings

During each abhishekam, everyone will have the opportunity to come to the altar to make offerings of Bilva leaves, water and a financial donation. Bilva leaves are made up of three leaflets and are sacred to Lord Shiva. Scriptures say that even the most terrible karma is destroyed when you offer a Bilva leaf to Lord Shiva. In addition to the donations given during abhishekam, it is customary to give a financial gift to Gurudev in the form of dakshina at the end of the festivities.

    How to make your offerings

    Wristbands

Due to the large number of registrants, we must divide everyone into four groups who will take turns being in the temple during the night. Be sure to stop by the main lobby in the afternoon on the day of the event to select your preferred time and get your coloured wristband indicating your time slot to be in the temple.

Each group will only be able to stay in the temple during one, or possibly two, of the rounds. However, everyone will have an opportunity to come during each round to offer Bilva leaves, water and a donation. Please note, everyone who is not in the temple will be able to watch the other rounds on livestream in the Darshan Hall. Announcements will be made during each round to let you know when it is time to come and make your offering.

    Sponsoring Maha Shivaratri Puja

Most of our festivities are free and open to the public. Sponsoring a puja is wonderful way to say thank you to Gurudev for all the blessings you have received from Him. It is also a generous way to help make the event available to others and to contribute to making it memorable for everyone.

The act of giving from the heart is a true blessing in and of itself. By helping to sponsor the event you reap the benefits from all the prayers done during the festivities. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you may still take part by becoming a sponsor.
